About the Talk

WHAT MATTERS MOST is the candid, approachable, profoundly practical guide we all need. On July 17, 2009, Chanel Reynolds ‘got the call’ we all fear: her young, athletic husband, José, had been struck by a van while cycling. One week later she removed him from medical support and drove home to tell their five-year old son. In the wake of his sudden death, Reynolds realized that she was completely unprepared for what came next. Were their drafted-but-still-unsigned wills valid? How would she afford the house? How much insurance did they have? What was probate court? What was the password to his phone? Simply put, she quickly learned she did not have her shit together—and when it comes to preparing for life’s eventualities or “what ifs,” it turns out that most of us don’t, either. Reynolds didn’t want anyone else to be as vulnerable and underprepared or feel as overwhelmed and unsure of where to start as she did. So, she collected lists and document templates of everything she ‘wished she would have done’ and created Get Your Shit Together, her personal project to help people better to prepare for the inevitable. She now says,“Hoping for the Best is not a Plan.”
